When Luke Desira met with the management of Abertax, he immediately realised that this company was already geared for success. They had already been certified for ISO 9001 and IATF 16949. Luke was called in to ensure that the company will achieve ISO 14001, the ISO standard geared towards safeguarding the environment, in the least bureaucratic way possible.
That is where Luke shone. He successfully integrated their existing management system with the new Environmental Management System.
How did Luke Desira Help Abertax?
When Luke first attempted to help Abertax, he knew straight away that he could not ignore their current management system. They have worked hard on it and it made no sense to replace what they had achieved. Therefore, Luke’s challenge was to seamlessly integrate the ISO 14001 management system with what was already existent.
Keeping with the core values of the company, together with the core values of ISO 14001, Luke wanted to focus on enhancing operational efficiency and sustainability. Therefore, he started with suggestions, such as:
- waste separation;
- data collection of waste quantities;
- reducing the use of stretch and seal.
The last one was critical since the company used this resource abundantly in its packaging and thanks to Luke, the company managed to significantly reduce its consumption, thus helping the environment while saving money.
Thanks to Abertax’s commitment, these suggestions were effortlessly implemented, ensuring a smoother and more eco-conscious workflow.
Moreover, Luke’s expertise extended beyond mere recommendations. His comprehensive review of documents spanned an extended period. This was done to ensure that the new management system integrated well with what was already existing. All this was done well, ensuring meticulous attention to detail and adherence to industry standards.
Furthermore, Luke wanted to make sure that all training sessions allowed employees to engage in conversation and pitch in their ideas. The sessions were far from mundane. They were engaging, fostering lively discussions on how to elevate Abertax’s Environmental Management System (EMS) with vibrant and energetic conversations. This approach sparked innovative ideas and led people to follow through with their ideas.
Luke’s efforts, coupled with those of the company and its employees, really reflected in the results of the external audit. The certification body found no minor or major non-conformities, while they only pointed out a couple of very minor opportunities for improvement.
